Phoenix Ghost, this mysterious drone that the United States will deliver to Ukraine – Evening edition Ouest-France

By Nicolas HASSON-FAURE

The United States will deliver Phoenix Ghost drones to Ukraine to counter the Russian invasion. Mysterious flying machines, about which very little information has emerged. Here’s what we know about these devices.

“What we do know is that they are very mysterious at the moment. » On the set of the American television channel CNN, the journalist Tom Foreman evokes, in these terms, the new drones that the United States announced to want to deliver to Ukraine to face the Russian invasion. The name of these unmanned flying machines on board: Phoenix Ghost. Machines “never seen before”, underlines CNN, Monday May 2, 2022. Here is what we know about this model of drone, of which 121 copies will be delivered to the Ukrainian army.

A “kamikaze” drone

Phoenix Ghost drones “features similar capabilities to those of the Switchblade series”, said John Kirby, spokesman for the United States Department of Defense, on April 21, announcing that these devices were part of the new envelope of 800 million dollars (758 million euros) of American military aid allocated to Ukraine.

The United States already supplies Ukraine with Switchblade drones, and Ukrainian military personnel have been trained to operate them on American soil. This type of machine is described by several media, such as the daily The Washington Postlike “suicide bomber”.

Understand: a “suicide drone”, loaded with explosives, which strikes targets while destroying itself. Equipped with a camera, the Switchblade can also be used to monitor a given territory, notes the American media The Drive.

It is therefore possible to imagine that the Phoenix Ghost looks like him: “A low-cost, single-use drone, a flying munition that flies through the air before crashing into a target,” summarizes the American media specializing in defense issues Breaking Defense.

A mysterious name

The comparison apparently goes no further, since according to John Kirby, the “abilities” of the Phoenix Ghost are not “not exactly the same” than those of the Switchblade series, although they are “similar”. However, he did not want to say more about the machine, manufactured by the American company AEVEX Aerospace and developed by the United States Air Force.

The Phoenix Ghost “was developed to meet a set of requirements that correspond very closely to what Ukrainians need at the moment in Donbass”, said a source presented as a “defense world official” and questioned by Breaking Defense. The Ukrainian army is currently trying to contain the Russian offensive in this region in the east of the country, where Russia is now concentrating its armed forces.

The source interviewed by the American media also notes that soldiers used to operating other drones will need training “minimal” before taking control of the Phoenix Ghost devices.

Another unknown remains: the name of these drones, which could be translated into French as “Phantom phoenix”. The interlocutor of Breaking Defense indicated not having ” no idea “ of the origin of this denomination.
