Dutch police announced on Thursday April 28 that they had seized several elephant tusks in the port of Rotterdam with an estimated value of some 50,000 euros, as part of an investigation into illegal ivory trafficking.
Police and customs said they seized 85 kg of ivory. “We suspect organized illegal ivory trafficking“, added the police, who began their investigation at the beginning of the year.
Police were alerted when a postal company spotted a large suspicious package containing a wooden crate. Inside, the police had discovered a single elephant tusk, which was analyzed. Other deliveries were intercepted, according to the police, who did not specify the origin and destination of these elephant tusks. She said, however, that environmental officers working with the Indonesian authorities were involved in the investigation.
