Proposed at 80/1, Rich Strike (Keen Ice) hit hard by signing a first Group success in the Kentucky Derby (Gr1), he who had been bought to claim last September! Forced to wait because of a wrong number, the student of Calumet Farm reviewed his rivals in the final phase to win by three quarters of a length in front of the favorite, Epicenter. Rich Strike is owned by Rick Dawson and trained by Eric Reed. He is the first Gr1 winner out of Keen Ice, a son of Curlin who stands at Calumet Farm. His dam, Gold Strike, won a Gr.3 at Woodbine at 3 years old. She also gave Llanarmon, winner at 2 of the Natalma Stakes (Gr2).
